Singing with the Whole Self
Shine singers learn to sing from the heart while making friends, building self-confidence, and having lots of fun! We also strive to help every child develop:
-An understanding of teamwork. There is a tremendous sense of belonging and camaraderie that comes with choral singing; each singer is an essential part of a sound that none could achieve alone.
-An appreciation of excellence and the effort it takes to get there. High standards in music inevitably lead to high standards in other activities, and the satisfaction of a job well done can be addictive!
-Strength in the parts of the brain that control language, mathematics, and spatial intelligence. Participation in musical activities has been shown to correlate to higher test scores and better grades.
-The ability to overcome fears and take risks. There is always a little bit of anxiety before a performance (it’s a good thing!), and by learning how to deal with it, children prepare to handle fear throughout life, and to never let it keep them from pursuing their goals.
-Confidence in their own creativity. Children are encouraged to participate fully in making the chorus great, whether it’s by suggesting songs, coming up with choreography, guest conducting, or even writing original music for the group to perform!
